I really enjoyed learning more about Shigeru after reading the other books. Shigeru has such a strong legacy and becomes a legend throughout the first four books.

Learning about his backstory and how he came to be the person so revered by so many after seeing what came from his itori somehow was more special. See 2 questions about Heaven’s Net Is Wide…. I am not familiar with Japanese history, so I came to this only knowing that the author had done a lot of research for the period in which her story occurs: The warriors are held above all others in this society, and have a variety of codes they live by.

This is a prequel for Hearn’s “Tales of the Otori” series, with the main character being Shigeru. We follo First book I’ve read by Lian Hearn, and it was a long one.

We follow him from his birth to his meeting of Tomasu, his nephew, many years later. There is a lot of political machinations within the Otori clan and between the Otori and the Tohan, a rival clan. Much happens over an eighteen-year span in the book, and there are many characters to keep track of; I confess, I referred to the genealogy trees on the author’s website to keep the relationships straight.

The whole story, while punctuated by betrayals and violence, has a calm feel, with quiet descriptions of gardens, and rain. And about the impact of klann plotting and fighting on their families and others. I’ll probably be checking out the “Tales of the Otori” some day.

Aug 08, Weni rated it really liked it. Saya suka kisah2 Jepang masa lalu. Saya suka Kisah Klan Otori. The culture of feudal Japan has a certain harsh attractiveness, and one of the things this author does well is display both the harshness, and the beauty.

Would I want to have lived in that period, particularly as a woman? But it’s a good place to visit, at least in the imagination. Probably I should have reread the original Otori series before circling back around to this prequel novel; I got confused about who people were, at least at first, and I’m sure some moments that were su The culture of feudal Japan has a certain harsh attractiveness, and one of the things this author does well is display both the harshness, and the beauty.

Probably I should have reread the original Otori series before circling back around to this prequel novel; I got confused about who people were, at least at first, and I’m sure some moments that were supposed to be emotionally significant didn’t land because I lacked the proper context, but it is still a compelling, and at times devastating read.

The characters are wonderful, fascinating, solid people, and if the action is sometimes a bit slow, well, it’s worth reading to find out what happens to them. Dec 13, Indri Juwono rated it really liked it Recommended to Indri by: Kembali ke awal pertempuran.

Kisah Klan Otori jilid 0.

Bagaimana keseharian Otori Takeshi? Kenapa Iida Sadamu sangat membenci Shigeru?

Apa latar belakang Shizuka, gadis Tribe yang menjadi selir Arai Daichii? Siapa Maruyama Naomi sebenarnya?

Bagaimana ayah Takeo yang Tribe mati? Kenapa paman-paman Shigeru sangat berpengaruh?

Heaven’s Net Is Wide (Kisah Klan Otori, #0) by Lian Hearn (4 star ratings)

There is a feeling that comes when one finds a new book by a favorite author that is indescribable. When I saw that there was a prequel to the Tales of the Otori, I klab felt truly joyous. There has never been a tremendous amount of writing about the “Far East” — but Hearn’s ilan of the Otori are in a class by themselves. Lian Hearn writes of what is basically a fantastic version of an unspecified period of time in Japanese history that, honestly, not a lot of people are familiar with, other than scholars. There is one book that will remain one of my all-time favorites, ootori David Mitchell, called The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet that is the opposite of Hearn’s, basically because the heart of the book is based on actual history of the Chrysanthemum Kingdom.

But Hearn, in his Japan of the Tribe, and the Hidden who appear to be Christians of a sort – has virtually no hint of real historical fact, but his medieval Japan is a mighty engrossing, fascinating world. I most wholeheartedly recommend ANY if the Otori tales — walking through a new world is an experience that does not come frequently.

As other reviewers have mentionned, I’m really glad I read this after Harsh cry of the heronwhich was a very disapointing conclusion to a fantastic series.
