I started at the very bottom of my field. Over the years I worked my way up to management. This lead to a challenge.
I was used to being the “top performer”, but when I brought this approach to management, I was quickly overwhelmed. I had to learn the hard way that management is largely getting things done through others. The only successful manager is the one who can effectively delegate. I first read Donna Genett’s book years ago.

I recently reread for general upkeep. When delegated to, be explicit and detail-minded. Ask your boss to confirm your understanding. He was clear about defining areas of the task that allowed for creativity or flexibility and clear about areas that needed to be done a certain way.
He specified the time frame within which the task must be completed, and spelled out deadlines. When a task or project becomes larger and more complex, it’s important to build in checkpoints. I would recommend this for someone who is a first time supervisor or has never been in management before. Easy to read, easy to understand. A good way to get a grip on the responsibilities of managing a department, other people, etc. It was a hokey setting but keeps your attention.
