This book provides a student’s jntroduction encounter with the concepts of measure theory and functional analysis. Its structure and content reflect the belief that difficult concepts should be introduced in their simplest and most concrete forms.
It is terse in the ingegration that it treats only a subset of those concepts typically found in a substantial graduate-level analysis course.
The book emphasizes the motivation of these concepts and attempts to treat them simply and concretely. After establishing the primary ideas and results, the text moves on to some applications. Chapter 7 introduces some concepts from measurable dynamics. The Birkhoff ergodic theorem is stated without proof and results on Fourier series from Chapter 6 are used to prove that an irrational rotation of the levesgue is ergodic and that the squaring map on the complex numbers of modulus 1 is integraton.
This book is suitable for an advanced undergraduate course or for the start of a graduate course. The text presupposes that the student has had a standard undergraduate course in real analysis. Read more Read less.

Please try again later. My professor was actually John Franks who used this teach his course about Lebesgue integral in the context of the real line. It makes the concepts surrounding this topic, as well as the most vital and important theorems about it, in my opinion crystal clear. However, as an introduction, I think this is a strong plus.
It is difficult to abstract to general measure theory if one does not already have already clearly understand any particular example of the theory. This book will give a very clear understanding of what is the most important example of measure theory, and thus I am fairly sure made learning measure theory from introductioj books later on much easier, because I was always able to compare with the specific example of the Lebesgue integral on the real line which I understood very well as a result of this book and professor Franks’s teaching.
Professor Franks lebesue gives a fairly clear example of a non-measurable set in an appendix as clear as any construction explicitly invoking the Axiom of Choice can be tto.
Anyway this book is a very good introduction for anyone learning mathematically rigorous integration for the first time, or perhaps also as a review for those who had learned the material before but don’t feel they understand it as well as they should although my personal experience only relates to the former.
Again, a great introduction, as mentioned in the book’s title. Pages with related products. See and discover other items: There’s a problem loading this menu right now.
