So I’m working on a Gauntlet Legends machine in which the red has gone, and only blue and green work.
Upon turning it on, I note that after a few minutes the blue goes out, and then after a minute comes back. After adjusting the focus, I power the machine down and pull the PCB off the end of the tube. The first thing I note is that 3 specific similar solder joint patterns are darkened, there is browning of the PCB in a semi-circular area around these solder points, and lastly, on the 2 worst looking sets, there are separated traces.
I can only presume the 3rd and worst of the 3 is red, the middle one is blue, while green is the least damaged looking. They don’t look damaged themselves, but the heatsinks attached are crappy clip on types that aren’t very big, which I would reason to be the cause since browning of a PCB indicates overheating. One is printed on the PCB, and reads: The other is a sticker and reads PI. Googling only gets me a semi-relevant hit on PI, linked here. What this comes down to is a few questions: I could probably zip tie an 80mm fan to blow directly on the C’s.
If they’re cheap, go ahead. If they’ve overheated it’s probably advisable anyway. Just solder some jumper wires between points on the same trace on opposite sides of the damage. If it were dual-layer, you’d need to do the same on the other side, and multi-layer, forget it. Lifted traces definitely need repair though and can’t be counted on as-is. Even if they were broken the repair procedure is the same.
Definitely put good heatsinks on, and dwtasheet thermal grease. If they contact anything such as soldering to the PCB make sure you use the insulating mica washer if necessary. So there are only transistors on the board?

There aren’t any burned resistors or anything else? You may be able to use the separated traces, I think I would try replacing the transistors, cutting off the separated traces up to a good section of trace, datasheef solder wires where the traces should be.
Maybe it’s the tube that’s burning out the board? Originally posted by Gandalf That’s actually pretty much what I was thinking. Well, from what I recall of looking at the PCB with it off the neck, it’s a single sided board, as all components are on one side, and solders on the other. Dayasheet I guess I could just remove the lifted traces and solder a small wire from the one component into the appropriate leg of the transistor.
The current heatsinks aren’t connected to anything but the tab. The transistors are free standing as are the heatsinks. For reference, here are 2 images I took with my phone: Originally posted by PottedMeat: As you can see by the image, they say only C There is other stuff on a different line, but all threee have the line C by itself.
Well, as you can somwwhat see in the image, there are other components on it, it’s a neckboard. So it has smaller transistors, resistors, etc. But the only damaged parts appear to be the transistors.

I certainly hope not. That’s what he said they would. Originally posted by Miles: I s’pose that is, but what I got was that he thought I might possibly have left out a part of the label. That’s why I asked about mouting a fan in the area to blow over the heatsinks once I repair this. The only fans in the machine are on the PC PSU, and then one 80mm blowing over an area of the game board and datasbeet blowing over the 3Dfx card attached to the game board.
Won’t consider calling dayasheet old-fashioned TV repairman? Even if you have to pay for a house call it would be better than damaging your Gauntlet 2sc1570 beyond repair by dicking around with it speaking from experience, having broken way too much stuff when I should have called an expert.

You asked, “To fan or not to fan? Now to be honest, I hadn’t thought about the heat of the tube having an effect on the transistors’ heatsinks doing their jobs, but there’s enough room above that I don’t think it’s the primary problem. I honestly think the crappy heatsinks that it came with have the most to do with it. No thermal grease, not secured, just clipped on pieces of cheap metal. I’m trying to fix this to sell it. I’m not interested in spending a few hundred to have a repairman do it when I can do it myself and have that money go towards other debts.
Further digging around netted me a parts list for a neckboard of the same type PK vs I. Apparently the Sanyo part number for those 3 transistors is 2SC A lot less helpful in some ways, as I would have to know all kinds of things about these to order them from a place like Mouser.
But it does appear I might be dztasheet to get a hold of the needed exact parts for the board. What about what it says on the ones you have? They are rated for higher voltage and current than the second kind, though lower frequency. Google easily tells you everything you need.
It doesn’t call for a C, or aor anything else. I know fuckall about the properties of transistors, but I do know how to solder and make basic electronic 2ec1507.
Have you considerred that maybe dztasheet a mistake? I mean, you do have the part in question right in front of you. What does it say? Not what they say. Might someone have worked on your machine before and used the wrong part?
I know fuckall about the properties of transistors Looks like you are in the same condition with regard to reading. The first is V and 1A while the second is only V and 0.
You are worried about a 1A part not being adequate so you replace it with one with less than half that? But then there datasheeet the frequency difference to consider. If you say so. I have no clue what should be used.

Aren’t there forums dedicated to this stuff. Can you get access to another machine to 2sc11507 at. Perhaps you should consider a pro before you have nothing. Need some info on making repairs to an arcade machine CRT’s electronics.
